The Consejería de Fomento, Infraestructuras y Ordenación del Territorio (Regional Ministry of Development, Infrastructures and Territorial Planning) will start a series of night-time traffic cuts due to the beginning of the works to reinforce and repair the roadbed of the highway between Seville and Alcalá de Guadaíra (Spain). Sustainable asphalt mixes (Masai), an innovation designed in collaboration with the University of Granada(UGR) and the Construction Engineering Laboratory (Labic) of the School of Civil Engineering of Granada, will be used in the works planned for this 14-kilometer stretch.
The new material, which is the result of an agreement between the UGR and the Junta de Granada, is beginning to be used on Andalusian roads. The asphalting will be carried out at night and in summer "to affect as little as possible the circulation in one of the stretches with the highest volume of traffic in Andalusia", according to the Regional Ministry in a press release.
The works, which have a budget of 5.5 million euros in charge of Probisa Vías y Obra, consist of actions on the road surface by restoring the draining layer of rolling in a section of 14 kilometers of the A-92 highway that had a strong deterioration, to the point of surfacing a number of pathologies such as loss of aggregate rolling, potholes, cracks and deformations.
This has led to the appearance, in rainy weather, of water pools on the road, with the consequent risk to road safety and loss of comfort for the user. It has also been noted that the vertical signs and signage are aging.
Sustainable asphalt materials 'made in' Granada
Masai are bituminous mixtures produced at a maximum temperature of 140 degrees and with unique characteristics, such as at least 20 percent of the weight being milled material from deteriorated roads or 0.5 percent reused material such as tire dust.
In addition to the use of Masai materials, the road surface of the different structures of the A-92 highway will be rehabilitated, so it will be necessary to consider the replacement of the expansion joints in case they are affected.
They will also proceed to the execution of the road markings using thermoplastic paint and two-component paint for symbols and zebreados. Also included is the renovation of the vertical signage, signage and beacons, to ensure proper visibility in unfavorable lighting conditions, since the current elements are very old due to the passage of time and exposure to atmospheric agents and do not meet the minimum needs of visibility and retroreflection.
Sustainable alternatives come in all forms, including sustainable construction. Good infrastructure (safe roads and an adequate amount of transportation for people, is becoming more and more important in everyone's everyday life. As a result of increasing urbanization, many people work in larger cities but live outside for financial reasons, among others, and thus commute every day between work and home. Especially during the morning and afternoon rush hours, civil society often has to wait in traffic jams - the roads are also under great stress due to the immense temperature differences between summer and winter. Well-developed roads increase their safety and sustainability with new material innovations. With this project, work is being done on sustainable alternatives in road construction, laying the foundation for improved infrastructure and at the same time working towards achieving various UN Sustainable Development Goals.
