Planet Ocean: Tides Are Changing – World Oceans Day 2023

On June 8th, the world will come together to celebrate World Oceans Day 2023 with the theme "Planet Ocean: Tides Are Changing". This annual event, organized by the United Nations (UN), aims to raise awareness about the critical role oceans play in sustaining life on Earth and mobilize global action towards their sustainable management. With a focus on the vision of global society and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this year's World Oceans Day will bring together decision-makers, indigenous leaders, scientists, private sector executives, civil society, celebrities, and youth activists to prioritize the ocean's well-being.

The ocean, covering over 70% of the planet, is a vital source of sustenance for humanity and countless other species. It generates at least 50% of the world's oxygen, supports biodiversity, and provides protein to more than a billion people worldwide. Furthermore, ocean-based industries are projected to employ around 40 million people by 2030, contributing significantly to the global economy.

Despite its invaluable contributions, the ocean is facing unprecedented challenges. With 90% of big fish populations depleted and 50% of coral reefs destroyed, human activities are surpassing the ocean's regenerative capacity. It is now imperative for us to work collectively towards restoring the ocean's vibrancy and protecting its delicate ecosystems.

The hybrid celebration of World Oceans Day 2023 will take place on June 8th at the UN Headquarters in New York. The event will be broadcasted live, enabling people worldwide to participate virtually. This year's theme, "Planet Ocean: Tides Are Changing," emphasizes the urgent need to shift our approach towards the ocean, focusing on sustainability and conservation.

Hosted by the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea of the Office of Legal Affairs of the United Nations, in partnership with the non-profit organization Oceanic Global and supported by Panerai, the event will showcase collaborative efforts and strategies to ensure the health and well-being of the ocean. The program will feature influential speakers from various backgrounds, discussing innovative solutions, policy frameworks, and initiatives to protect and restore the ocean's ecosystems.

World Oceans Day presents an opportunity for civil society to actively engage in the movement for ocean conservation. Citizens worldwide are encouraged to participate in events, both digital and in-person, to learn about the impact of human actions on the ocean and advocate for sustainable practices. By uniting the world's population around the goal of ocean stewardship, we can create a global movement that drives transformative change and safeguards the future of our oceans.

In conjunction with World Oceans Day 2023, the United Nations is organizing a photo contest, showcasing the breathtaking beauty of the oceans. This contest aims to inspire individuals to appreciate and value the ocean's wonders. The winners will be announced shortly, but in the meantime, everyone is encouraged to explore the stunning photographs captured in previous editions.

As we celebrate World Oceans Day on June 8th, let us reflect on the significance of the ocean in our lives and reaffirm our commitment to protect and preserve this invaluable resource. Together, we can make a difference and ensure a sustainable future for "Planet Ocean".
