In northwest Syria, particularly in Idlib province, years of war have decimated the national grid, leaving over 90% of the population without reliable electricity. In response, communities have turned to solar power. Farmers in Hasakeh province use solar panels to operate irrigation systems, reviving agriculture in the region. Hospitals and displacement camps have adopted solar microgrids to maintain critical services, reducing dependence on costly diesel generators.
Organisations like the Union of Syrian Medical Relief Organizations (UOSSM) have introduced solar-powered electric vehicles to facilitate healthcare delivery in remote areas. These initiatives not only provide immediate relief but also lay the groundwork for sustainable energy solutions in post-conflict.
Ukraine: Rebuilding energy infrastructure through renewables
