Achieving sustainable energy for all is a cornerstone of global development, directly aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7) and supporting wider objectives like climate action, economic equality, and social justice. Energy access impacts every aspect of modern life, from healthcare and education to economic growth and environmental protection. However, nearly 733 million people worldwide still lack access to electricity, while 2.4 billion depend on harmful cooking practices, underscoring the urgent need for scalable, inclusive solutions.

The pressing need for sustainable energy solutions

The global energy landscape is undergoing transformative changes. With increasing reliance on renewable energy sources, nations are moving towards systems that prioritise sustainability and resilience. Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), established in 2011 by former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, is at the forefront of this shift. The organisation’s mission encompasses universal energy access, enhancing energy efficiency, and expanding the share of renewables in the global energy mix.

Damilola Ogunbiyi, SEforALL's CEO, has emphasised the necessity of bridging the energy equity gap, particularly for countries in the Global South. Ogunbiyi's call for innovative financing mechanisms and targeted investment strategies reflects the critical role of international collaboration in addressing energy poverty and mitigating climate change.

SEforALL’s initiatives are a testament to its commitment to global goals. Programmes such as the Universal Energy Facility (UEF) provide results-based financing to support renewable energy projects across Sub-Saharan Africa. Meanwhile, Powering Healthcare integrates sustainable energy into healthcare systems, enhancing medical services in underserved areas. The Cooling for All initiative addresses the rising demand for cooling solutions in a warming world, ensuring climate-friendly innovations reach vulnerable populations.

The organisation's advocacy for clean cooking has also led to a reduction in reliance on traditional biomass fuels. This effort has not only improved health outcomes but also contributed to gender equality by alleviating the burden of fuel collection, which disproportionately affects women and children.

Energy transition plans: A case study in Nigeria

Nigeria serves as a leading example of how countries can leverage energy transition plans to meet their unique challenges. With over 92 million Nigerians lacking electricity and 175 million without clean cooking solutions, the nation launched its Energy Transition Plan (ETP) in 2021. The ETP, developed with SEforALL's support, outlines a pathway to achieve SDG7 by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2060.

The plan identifies sector-specific opportunities, such as renewable energy generation, clean cooking initiatives, and the decarbonisation of transport and industry. Since its inception, Nigeria has secured over $3.6 billion for ETP projects, including the construction of solar generation and battery storage facilities. These advancements highlight the importance of structured frameworks in attracting international investment.

The need for sustainable energy solutions is backed by compelling statistics. Globally, the renewable energy sector attracted $500 billion in investments in 2022. However, less than 2% of these funds were directed towards Africa. Bridging this disparity is essential to achieving global energy equity.

Looking ahead, the International Energy Agency estimates that achieving universal energy access by 2030 will require $35 billion annually—far less than the subsidies currently allocated to fossil fuels. By redirecting resources and fostering partnerships, the global community can create a more equitable energy future.

The role of the Global Society

The Global Society plays a pivotal role in advancing SDG7. Collaborative efforts among governments, private entities, and non-profit organisations amplify the impact of initiatives like SEforALL. Platforms like COP27 have highlighted the critical need for financial commitments from wealthier nations to support energy transitions in developing countries.

As Ogunbiyi aptly noted, “Climate action and economic equality are inseparable.”

Universal access to sustainable energy is more than a goal—it is a necessity for achieving social justice, economic equality, and environmental protection. Organisations like SEforALL demonstrate that innovative solutions, combined with global collaboration, can drive meaningful progress. However, realising these objectives will require continued investment, science-driven strategies, and a collective commitment to justice and strong institutions.
