In the face of escalating climate challenges and the pressures of hosting large refugee populations, Jordan has embarked on a transformative journey towards sustainable development. The "Emergency Response to Climate Change and Natural Resource Crises in Refugee Hotspots in Jordan" project, launched in September 2024, exemplifies this commitment.
Integrating environmental conservation with livelihoods
This collaborative initiative, spearheaded by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, the Jordanian Ministry of Agriculture, and funded by the Japanese government, targets 150 beneficiaries, including Syrian refugees and host community members in Zaatari Refugee Camp, Ajloun, and Jerash. Its multifaceted approach addresses disaster risk reduction, community-based solutions, and forest rehabilitation.
Key achievements and impact
· Forest rehabilitation: Restoration of 70 hectares of fire-damaged forests through the planting of 58,000 seedlings.
· Employment generation: Creation of over 110 temporary green jobs, with 45 positions filled by women, promoting gender inclusivity in environmental initiatives.
· Community-based organisations (CBOs): Provision of training and resources for disaster preparedness and sustainable livelihoods, including beekeeping.
· Local seedling production: Production of over 18,000 seedlings locally, fostering community involvement and sustainability.
· Financial investment: Allocation of $102,000 towards job creation and support for CBOs.
Alignment with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
This initiative aligns with several SDGs, notably:
· SDG 2: Zero Hunger: By enhancing food security through sustainable agricultural practices.
· SDG 15: Life on Land: Through the protection and restoration of terrestrial ecosystems and sustainable forest management.
The project's emphasis on integrating refugees and host communities fosters social cohesion and shared responsibility in environmental stewardship.
Strategic importance and broader context
Jordan's vulnerability to climate change, characterized by increasing wildfires and droughts, necessitates proactive measures. The country's commitment to climate adaptation is evident in its National Adaptation Plan and the Updated Climate Change Policy (2022–2050), which advocate for community-based approaches and the integration of climate resilience into national development strategies.
The success of the Jerash and Ajloun initiatives underscores the potential of collaborative, community-driven projects in addressing climate challenges while promoting sustainable development and social integration.
Global collaboration and the role of society
The achievements in Jordan highlight the importance of global collaboration in addressing climate change and promoting sustainability. International support, combined with local engagement, can lead to impactful solutions that benefit both the environment and communities.
Jordan's community-led climate resilience initiatives serve as a model for integrating environmental conservation with sustainable livelihoods. By aligning with global goals and fostering collaboration between refugees and host communities, these projects contribute significantly to the broader agenda of sustainable development.
