Editorial Team SDG11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities
At Global Society News (GSN), the Editorial Team SDG11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities is devoted to examining how urban transformation, inclusive planning, and sustainable living can shape the future of humanity. This team of journalists, urban planners, and sustainability experts investigates how cities — now home to more than half of the world’s population, can grow responsibly, providing security, opportunity, and well-being without compromising the planet’s ecological balance.
Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG11) – Sustainable Cities and Communities, established under the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, aims to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. It recognises that the future of development depends on how cities manage housing, infrastructure, transport, waste, and resources, while also preserving cultural heritage and fostering social inclusion.
Urbanisation has been one of the most defining trends of the modern era, bringing both progress and pressure. Cities generate over 80% of global GDP but also account for the majority of greenhouse gas emissions. Challenges such as inadequate housing, congestion, pollution, and vulnerability to climate-related disasters continue to threaten urban life, especially in rapidly growing regions. Yet, cities are also hubs of innovation, places where technology, community action, and policy reform can converge to create lasting solutions.
The Editorial Team SDG11 at GSN reports on these evolving dynamics through field research, interviews with urban innovators, and collaboration with architects, sociologists, and policymakers. The team highlights sustainable transport systems, green building initiatives, and community-led urban regeneration projects that redefine what it means to live sustainably. Their journalism also explores the connection between urban resilience and social justice, showing how inclusive design, access to public spaces, and participatory governance strengthen cities and empower citizens.
Aligned with the vision of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), GSN’s editorial approach promotes knowledge-sharing and visibility for successful urban initiatives around the world, from affordable housing models and smart infrastructure to circular economy projects that reduce waste and emissions.
By advancing the message of “Sustainable Cities and Communities”, the Editorial Team SDG11 reaffirms that the cities of the future must be built not only with concrete and technology, but with compassion, inclusion, and environmental responsibility. Their mission is to inform and inspire efforts to design human settlements that serve both people and the planet, ensuring that urban life becomes a source of equality, resilience, and shared prosperity.
