Editorial Team SDG14 – Life Below Water

At Global Society News (GSN), the Editorial Team SDG14 – Life Below Water is dedicated to exploring the state of the world’s oceans and the global efforts to protect marine ecosystems. This team of journalists, marine biologists, and environmental policy specialists investigates how oceans, which cover more than 70% of the planet’s surface, sustain life, regulate the climate, and support the livelihoods of billions, while facing unprecedented human pressures.

Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG14) – Life Below Water, established under the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, seeks to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development. It calls for action to prevent and reduce marine pollution, regulate overfishing, protect coastal and marine ecosystems, and increase scientific knowledge to strengthen ocean governance.

The oceans are the lungs of our planet, producing over half of the world’s oxygen and absorbing much of the carbon dioxide generated by human activity. Yet, marine ecosystems are under severe threat from pollution, acidification, rising temperatures, and unsustainable exploitation. Plastic waste now reaches the most remote corners of the seas, coral reefs are dying at alarming rates, and entire marine species face extinction. Despite these challenges, global awareness and cooperation are increasing, driving progress in marine protection and sustainable fisheries management.

The Editorial Team SDG14 at GSN reports on these crucial issues through data-based journalism, scientific collaboration, and partnerships with conservation organisations and coastal communities. The team highlights marine restoration projects, sustainable fishing practices, and technological innovations that help monitor, preserve, and regenerate marine ecosystems. Their coverage also examines the emerging blue economy, a model that promotes economic growth and job creation while maintaining the health of ocean environments.

Aligned with the principles of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, GSN’s editorial work promotes responsible stewardship of the oceans as a global public good. The Editorial Team SDG14 seeks to amplify the voices of scientists, activists, and local fishers who are at the frontline of marine conservation, showing that collective action can restore balance between human progress and ocean health.

By advancing the message of “Life Below Water”, the Editorial Team SDG14 reaffirms that the survival of the oceans is inseparable from the survival of humanity. Their mission is to inform, inspire, and mobilise support for sustainable ocean management, protecting biodiversity, securing livelihoods, and ensuring that the seas continue to sustain life for generations to come.
